MEASURING TOPOGRAPHY THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

In many urban environments we experience peripheries between the natural and the synthetic environment. Interaction and unity often occur due to the close proximity between the two within the confines of an urban space. There are spaces such as these where the extent of the growth has been unacknowledged for such a period of time that the interaction between the synthetic and natural, and indeed the natural and natural, has resulted in a fascinating display of diversity.

Through searching for spaces where phenomena such as this occurs, a wall was found stretching from west to east along the coast of Brighton, East Sussex. Along the length of the wall are a series of growths that protrude out of it and the further east one journeys the more diverse and abundant the growths become. This marginal space, a topographical accident, seems to have developed a sort of sustainability all by itself.

The employment of the camera to record this space serves a specific function, whilst the photograph itself serves another. The camera is used in its most fundamental form, as an instrument used purely to record. By placing the camera within a rigid structure of parameters throughout the entire space, the series of photographs that occur illustrate not only the change that occurs from left to right, but also the uncanny familiarity of the change that occurs when a singular space evolves over time. Through using the camera within given parameters, each singular space can be treated democratically.
