BOUNDARIES

In a modern day metropolis we encounter boundaries in multitude of different contexts. The constant expansion of population coupled with the monumental acceleration of the economy has resulted in an extraordinary demand for new areas of private and public space. Of course, the demand is catered for, and the result is a closer proximity between the private and public.

The idea of a boundary can be interpreted in a literal sense or in a more ambiguous one. In the modern city society is persuaded through thresholds and checkpoints such as security cameras and Oyster Card readers. Through the scrupulous arrangement of these points it is made clear where we should and should not go.

My attention is drawn to the more elusive notion of the boundary; places where there is a conflict between the functions of two areas, which seem to highlight the fragility of the city’s façade. In an environment over-saturated with finance and populace, the contrast between these boundaries becomes a visual statement about our growing economy and our insatiable appetite to expand.
